Last Saturday, 43 new deacons and priests were ordained at South Rwenzori Diocese. The service was held at St. Paul’s Cathedral and presided over by Bishop Nason Baluku.
The theme of the service was “Consider your call,” based on 1 Corinthians 1:26. It was led by Rev. Ven. Charles Mbusa and Rev. Misach Bulemu. The service, which was attended by hundreds of supportive friends and family members, began with praise and worship songs including “How Great Thou Art.”
The ordinands and reverends had just completed a three-day retreat with their spouses at Kamaiba Youth Center, where they thought about their calling and prepared for the milestone event. The retreat leader, Rev. Can. Dr. Uzziah Maate Kiriaghe, was also the speaker at the service. His sermon referenced many biblical examples of people being chosen for service, including when Jesus told his disciples “the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few” (Matthew 9:37) and Peter’s message to the churches that “you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 Peter 2:9).
Comparing the ordinands and deacons to Moses, whose face shone when he came down from Mt. Sinai, Rev. Can. Uzziah said “It is my prayer that they go out of here sharing the love of Jesus Christ.” He also warned those being ordained that their ministry would not be easy – they would be “sheep among wolves” (Matthew 10:16) – and encouraged them to remember where God brought them from to be where they are today.
After the men and women being ordained were introduced to the congregation, they came before the bishop to be blessed and commissioned individually. There were 37 men and women who were ordained as deacons, and 6 deacons who were priested. The service also included a blessing for their spouses, an offering of thanksgiving, and Holy Communion. Following the service, the newly ordained deacons and priests gathered outside the building with their families and friends to celebrate the momentous occasion.
