Connecting the church with schools and children
The Directorate of Education oversees 134 church-founded primary schools and 13 secondary schools (Bwera, Mutanywana, Kisinga Vocation, Kibanzanga, All Saint’s Kitholhu, St. John’s Nyakabingo, Busaara High Hill, Bwera Comprehensive, Kyambara, Nyakabale, Kahokya, St. Paul’s, and Nyakahya), of which 4 are government aided.
Bwera Secondary School is the best in academic performance in the district.
The directorate also manages two church-founded tertiary institutions: Kagando School of Nursing and Midwifery with a total population of 614 (215 M, 399 F), which offers certificates and diploma courses, and Kisinga Divinity College, which has evolved into the Rwenzori Anglican University Project.
The directorate has seen 52 modern school libraries established in 52 schools across the diocese by Education Uganda United Kingdom, and 142 chaplaincies.
The Directorate of Education interfaces with the Government’s Ministry of Education and provides church-founded schools with policy guidance and resources for improving educational standards.
The director of education is Rev. Asa Kiriaghe.
Units in the Department of Education
- Children’s Ministry: reaches children for Christ in order to facilitate spiritual learning and growth for Christian witness among children, equips children’s workers and children so that they will grow to maturity, develops strategies for nurturing and discipleship of children, and sensitizes the church and the community to the role and place of children. - Community Health Empowerment (CHE): a separate ministry whose focus is holistic transformation of individuals and communities and training of trainers on community health issues. CHE’s roots are found in the program. Contact person: Rev. Girison Kibethe, +256 773 711 379
- Boys and Girls Brigade: trains young people with skills in music and foot drills; fosters good morals and provides guidance; participates in church mission programs.
- Orphans and Vulnerable Children: provides school fees, scholastic materials, and lunch for some pupils. The project’s two partners are St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral Tallahassee – USA and Romsey Deanery – UK.
St. Paul’s Vocational Secondary School development is supported by Classroom For Africa which has constructed classroom blocks, a Laboratory and the ongoing construction works of Hostel (Boys and Girls Dormitories) and the Science Laboratory.
