Education Uganda

Preparing the next generation for success

Education Uganda focuses on improving education in rural and semi-urban schools and the livelihood of children.

Education Uganda started in 2006, when Chris Lloyd championed using slates as one of the learning aids to improve the quality of education in the Rwenzori region and beyond. These were distributed across all schools to improve literacy and numeracy. The new slates have improved performance in schools and sparked trainings of teachers on how to use them. While exercise books are for memory, slates are a thinking tool that allow experimenting and problem solving, which are essential to pupils’ learning.

South Rwenzori Diocese focuses on three areas to fulfill Jesus’ ministry, which was characterized by the provision of spiritual, social and health services to the community. These three areas are evangelism, teaching and healing.

The diocese is working to ensure that its communities are fully equipped with relevant knowledge and skills by opening primary, secondary, and tertiary schools, a university, and health facilities; demonstrating environmental protection and providing water to disadvantaged areas; and encouraging kitchen gardening and animal husbandry, among others.

South Rwenzori Diocese recognizes that the provision of social services improves the standard of living of people and the community, and it is committed to promoting the welfare and rights of the vulnerable, disadvantaged, poor, people with disabilities, and the elderly; and to improving the capacity of communities to harness and uplift the standard of human life.

The diocese adopts an integrated and coordinated planning and development approach which aims for equitable development to improve people’s and the community’s welfare. It does this by educating people in different life skills and implementing activities that improve the livelihood of humanity.

History

The Rwenzori region has for a long time been characterized by a series of civil and tribal conflicts that affected the education of the area. Many schools in rural areas were burnt and abandoned by the population due to these wars and conflicts, which affected the level of education particularly in Bundibugyo, Bunyangabo, Ntoroko and Kasese districts.

With these low levels of education, the founder of Education Uganda came in to uplift the standards through slate use and library building.

Libraries for schools

Festivals

Reading for fun is being inculcated through annual reading competitions in schools and handwork days every Wednesday afternoon.

Capacity building

We engage teachers in trainings to make learning enjoyable for learners. Experienced and committed teachers make the trainings practical with new approaches to teaching across all ages, including early childhood centers. Teachers are being taught games that help children learn through play.
